Trip or Slip? on a Playground

A 3 y.o. girl experienced a unwitness fall while climbing steps on a playground receiving a laceration above her right eye.  The mother contended the girl slipped on the sand protective surfacing which had migrated to the steps and platform.  A biomechanics review by Al Vangura Jr. MS, CPSI revealed the mechanism of injury for the girl was striking her head on a handrial for the steps after misplaced her foot and tripping while climbing the steps.

Fall from Monkey Bars

A 5 y.o. boy fell from a horizontal ladder - often called Monkey Bars, to the ground below at a resort in the Bahamas.  The horizontal ladder was connected to a tower which had a wooden platform at its base.  The boy fell onto the platform fracturing his right femur.  An analysis by playground safety expert, Al Vangura Jr. MS, CPSI, revealed that the playground design did not meet US CPSC and ASTM standards for playgrounds and that the mechanism of injury was striking the base wooden platform.  Had the horizontal ladder ended sufficiently far enough away to eliminate the risk of falling onto the platform, the boy would have not fractured his leg.

Merry-Go-Round BRAKE??

A 6 y.o. boy claimed to be thrown from a merry-go-round causing a fractured neck when the gentleman who was propelling it continued to accelerate it.  After the accident, the boy walked home, spent several hours, then returned to the park where an ambulance was called.  Plaintiff's mother claimed the brake on the merry-go-round was defective and did not limit the speed.  After injury analysis, it was determined the boy was not injured as stated and the merry-go-round brake operated properly... the case settled.
